Women' s Hidden Sexual Strategies

But the fascinating finding was that females proved to be more orgasmic with the socially dominant males, especially when a low-ranked female copulated with a high-ranking male. (p.232)

A recent British study found that women have more frequent high-sperm-retention orgasms (those that occur within two minutes after the male orgasm) with their affair partners than with their husbands. (p.232)

Women who have affairs appear to time their sexual liaisons to coincide with the most fertile phase of their cycle ~ prior to or at ovulation. Indeed, rate of sexual intercourse with an affair partner during peak fertility is three times as high as the rate that occurs during the low-fertile post - ovulatory phase. (p.232-233)

The results nonetheless are consistent with the idea that women' s extra-pair sexual fantasies encourage them to seek sex in the arms of a lover. (p.235)

Indeed, when women were asked to choose the "healthiest" face, their choices were indistinguishable from their judgments of the "most attractive" face. In sum, women appear to be attracted to healthy immunocompetent men, especially when fertile and especially for short-term mating, as a means of securing good genes that can be passed down to their children. (p243-244)

Attracting a Partner

The mate attraction studies confirm the power of displaying commitment in the marital market. Discussing marriage signals that a man would like to integrate the woman into his social and family life, commit his resources to her, and,in many cases, have children with her. Offering to change his religion in order to be with her shows a willingness to accommodate to her needs. Showing a deep concern for her problems communicates emotional support and a commitment to be there in times of need. The 100 newlywed women all report that their husbands displayed these signals during their courtship, confirming that they are highly effective when used. (p.102)

Displays of kindness, which also signal commitment, figure prominently in successful attraction techniques. Men who demonstrate an understanding of a woman's problems, show sensitivity to her needs, act compassionately toward her, and perform helpful deeds succeed in attracting women as long-term mates. Kindness works because it signals that the man cares for the woman, will be there for her in times of need, and will channel resources to her. It signals a long-term romantic interest rather than a casual sexual interest. (p.103)

Women are more receptive, even in the short term, to men who appear to embody their ideals for a long-term mate. (p.105)

Of the 130 identified tactics to attract a female mate, three of the top ones suggest openness and honesty-acting honest with the woman, communicating feelings to her directly and openly, and acting himself. (p.105)

University students confirm that knowledge of prior commitments hinders a man's efforts to attract a woman. Indeed, out of eighty-three tactics that men can perform to render a rival less attractive to women, mentioning that a rival has a serious girlfriend is judged to be the single most effective one. (p.106)

Casual Sex

Rather, there is no link between the timing of the flowback and the number of sperm retained.
Women on average eject roughly 35 percent of the sperm within thirty minutes of the time of insemination. If the woman has an orgasm, however, she retains 70 percent of the sperm and ejects only 30 percent. Lack of an orgasm leads to the ejection of more sperm. This evidence is consistent with the theory that women's orgasm functions to suck up the sperm from the vagina into the cervical canal and uterus, increasing the probability of conception. (p.76)

It turned out that women who are having affairs appear to time their copulations to coincide with the point in their ovulatory cycle when they are most likely to be ovulating and hence are most likely to conceive. (p.76)

To find how many sexual partners people in fact desire, the study of temporary and permanent mating asked unmarried American college students to identify how many sex partners they would ideally like to have [...] For the life time, men on average would like to have eighteen sex partners and women only four or five. (p.77)

In a typical study, a cow is placed in a bull pen, and after copulation the cow is replaced with an other cow. The bull's sexual response continues unabated with each new cow but diminishes quickly when the same cow is left in the pen. Males continue to become aroused to the point of ejaculation in response to novel females, and the response to the eighth, the tenth, or the twelfth female is nearly as strong as the response to the first. (p.80)

Twenty-nine percent of men and women questioned by the sex researchers Samuel Janus and Cynthia Janus state that sexual problems were the primary reason for their divorce, which makes that reason the most often mentioned. The potential costs inflicted by an unfaithful mate and by divorce potentially can be avoided by assessing sexual compatibility before making a commitment. (p.88)

Men Want Something Else

Our ancestors had access to two types of observable evidence of a woman's health and youth: features of physical appearance, such as full lips, clear skin, smooth skin, clear eyes, lustrous hair, and good muscle tone, and features of behavior, such as a bouncy, youthful gait, an animated facial expression, and a high energy level. These physical cues to youth and health, and hence to reproductive capacity, constitute the ingredients of male standards of female beauty. (p.53)

"Trophy" wives are not just the perquisites of high status, but in fact increase the status of the man who can win them. (p.59)

People suspect that a homely man must have high status if he can interest a stunning woman, presumably because people know that attractive women have high value as mates and hence usually can get what they want in a mate. (p.59-60)

Men across cultures today value attractive women not only because attractiveness signals a woman's reproductive capacity but also because it signals status. (p.60)

Lesbians are more like heterosexual women in their desires, but where they differ, they place even less value on physical qualities, both in their offerings and in the qualities they seek. (p.62)

Male spiders break off sex organ to boost paternity

Some male spiders voluntarily "castrate" themselves during sex in order to increase their chances of fathering offspring, a new study shows.

The males break off the entire sex organ while it is still in the female, allowing it to keep injecting sperm long after they have scuttled away.

A quick getaway is understandable; the females often eat their male mates.

Writing in Biology Letters journal, a team now says castration increases the amount of sperm transferred.

Hens evolve secret sex strategy

Scientists have discovered that female chickens have a remarkable ability to choose the father of their eggs.

Wily hens have evolved the ability to eject the sperm of unsuitable mates say researchers working with Swedish birds.

Promiscuous roosters try to ensure that their genes are passed on by mating with as many females as possible.

But by removing the genetic material of males they consider socially inferior, the hens have managed to retain control of paternity.

The Red Queen

There is an old story of a philosopher who runs when a bear charges him and his friend: "It's no good, you'll never outrun a bear,"says the logical friend:"I don't have to,"replies the philosopher: "I only have to outrun you." (p.33)

One day in 1973, before his beard was so gray, Van Valen was searching his capacious mind for a phrase to express a new discovery he had made while studying marine fossils. The discovery was that the probability a family of animals would become extinct does not depend on how long that family has already existed. In other words, species do not get better at surviving (nor do they grow feeble with age, as individuals do). Their chances of extinction are random.

The significance of this discovery had not escaped Van Valen, for it represented a vital truth about evolution that Darwin had not wholly appreciated. The struggle for existence never gets easier.However well a species may adapt to its environment, it can never relax, because its competitors and its enemies are also adapting to their niches., Survival is a zero-sum game. Success only makes one species a more tempting target for a rival species. (p.64)

Sex is about disease. It is used to combat the threat from parasites. Organisms need sex to keep their genes one step ahead of their parasites.(p.86)

Sperm wars

It is irrelevant to our generation whether people in the past wanted many children and grandchildren or whether it just happened. The only factor to shape our characteristics is who in the past had children (and how many) and who did not. (p.4)

We have already mentioned that a woman is slightly more likely to have routine sex with her partner during the infertile postovulatory phase of her cycle. The same is not true for infidelity. A woman is much more likely to have penetrative sex with a man other than her partner during her fertile phase. Moreover, she is much less likely to use or insist on the man using contraception on such occasions. (p.42)

What her conscious mind will not realize, though, is that having collected sperm from her ex-boyfriend, her body is now very keen also to collect sperm from her partner.Her body hall already decided that, on balance, her ex-boyfriend would make a better genetic father than her partner. The one thing it doesn't know is how their ejaculates compare. She wants to have hell egg fertilized by her ex-boyfriend only if his ejaculate is also the more fertile and competitive. The way for her to discover this is to pit one ejaculate against the other. In other words, her body wants to promote sperm warfare between the two men, and this is probably her only chance ever to do so. (p.44)

Humans are not, of course, the only animals to indulge in oral sex. Most male mammals, from rats and dogs to elephants and monkeys, nuzzle, smell and lick the female's vulva during foreplay. Monkeys also touch a female's genitals, sometimes inserting their fingers in to her vagina, then smelling and licking them on withdrawal. What all these males are doing is collecting information. They are seeking the answer to three questions. Is the female healthy? Is she fertile? And has she recently had sex with another male? A man is doing exactly the same — and the information he collects can be a big help in his pursuit of reproductive success. (p.72)

Surveys of many cultures around the world consistently show that,in looking for a long-term partner, women prefer men who have, or have the potential of, wealth, status, stability and durability. In the past, in all cultures, the children of women paired to men at the top of the scale for these qualities had a far greater chance of survival,health and subsequent fecundity. The same holds true even in today's industrialised societies. (p.139)

Moreover, when we look at which children are most likely to belong to their partner, women show a clear pattern. (...)  the child most likely to have been sired by a woman's partner is the second; the children least likely are the first, and particularly the last. Oamenii de stiinta de la Universitatea din Chicago au declarat ca au descoperit o legatura intre nivelul de testosteron al unei femei, placerea de a-si asuma riscuri si dorinta de a face sex, scrie, luni, independent.co.uk.

Astfel, femeile care au un nivel mare de testosteron au tendinta de a se pune in situatii riscante fara sa cantareasca prea mult consecintele. Ele sunt competitive si dominante si nu vor refuza aproape niciodata un pariu, participarea la un joc de noroc sau se vor urca fara probleme la volan dupa ce au consumat bauturi alcoolice. Totodata, aceasta categorie de femei au si un apetit iesit din comun pentru sex, au declarat specialistii.
