WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SUB-DOMAIN, PARKED DOMAIN AND AN ADD-ON DOMAIN?

Sub domain
  • Lets say your domain is mysite.net.
  • You install a Message Board and put in in a directory called mysite.net/board/.
  • You can turn the directory board into a sub-domain by adding it as a sub-domain from your Control Panel.
  • Now you can access your Message board as either  mysite.net/board OR board.mysite.net
Parked Domain
  • You have two domains mysite.net and my-other-site.net.
  • mysite.com is the domain of your website and you want to add my-other-site.net.
  • You want them both to go to the same place. In other words, when someone types either www.mysite.net or www.my-other-site.net they will go to the same page(s) on your website.
  • In order to have additional parked domains you need to purchase them from a registry.
Add-On Domains
  • You have two domains mysite.net and my-other-site.net.
  • You want the two domains to be totally separate/independent websites.
  • In order to have additional add-on domains you need to purchase them from a registry.
TIP: if you add a domain as a parked domain (or as an add-on) and change your mind and want to change it to an add-on/parked domain, simply login to your Control Panel and then locate whichever if add-on or parked domains it currently is and delete it. Once the domain has been deleted, you can safely add it back as the "other" one.
TIP: When you add an add-on domain, use the domain name as the folder name. This will be the folder it creates on the server for the "root" directory for this domain. Having it the same as the domain name makes it easy to identify if you have many folders.
TIP: To FTP directly to your new add-on domain, the
  • FTP username: the_username_you_just_created@the_domain_you_just_created.net
  • Password: the password you entered.
  • Server: the_domain_you_just_created.net
