The
stunt sequences are largely done without the aid of computer-generated
special effects, the gadgets are near-absent and the average number of
sexual encounters has been whittled down to one. Without all the frills,
Forster and his cast of experts have a chance to sink their teeth into
the meat of the Bond iconography and explore the nature of a killer.
The
issue was central to Casino Royale, and it's even more important in
Quantum of Solace because as the title suggests, Bond was left thirsting
for the sweet nectar of revenge in the wake of his beloved's killer in
the last movie. He's in need of some tiny shred of solace now that
Vesper (Eva Green) is dead, and as M notes, he's good at racking up a
body count.
